Speaking recently with Empire Magazine (via The Direct), Tenoch Huerta, who plays Namor, shared that his character is not a villain in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but he sees him rather as an anti-hero. “Latin-Americans are always the bad guys in Hollywood movies. And now we are the heroes - or an anti-hero, in this instance…,” he said. In addition, the article also shared their hopes that Huerta’s casting will give the same inspiration to the Mexican and Latino communities as the first Black Panther film did for the Black community.

Since we haven’t seen the film, it is hard to tell what Huerta exactly meant when he described the character as “anti-hero” instead of just simply a villain which is what the trailers seemingly apply. You also have to add the fact that the words came from Huerta, who didn’t perceive his character as a villain from an acting standpoint. Either way, it is interesting to see how the film will handle the portrayal of Namor in the film considering that he is known as a hero in the comics instead of an antagonist. It’s also curious to see whether the conclusion of the film will end up making him set up as a hero in the MCU moving forward considering how pivotal the character is in the comics for decades as a superhero.
